"HORRIBLE assembly instructions...quality stinks!" 2010-09-28

I've owned Dremel products for years, and like them. I bought this expecting it to work with my "older" Dremel from the late 1990s...

First of all, out of the box...NO VISUAL STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS whatsoever. I've written technical documentation in the past, and have assembled many things including a full-sized Craftsman table saw. I was shocked at how horrible and incomplete the instructions were for this product. It has a not-so-helpful diagram, and a few short instructions in the "Assembly" area of the manual. As far as I'm concerned, I could've been reading the Spanish instructions and had an easier time.

There is a telescoping tube that has rubber caps on each end. Not understanding what they are for, I removed them and took the two tubes apart (they were never mentioned in the assembly). Then I struggled to figure out how to put it all together. It ends up you're supposed to leave the two tubes nested, and extend one of them. Not clear from the instructions! (perhaps that was covered in the Spanish section!)

There is a locking mechanism on the back of the unit that holds the Dremel, but I don't think it ever mentions attaching it BEFORE sliding the drill press unit down the shaft...so after I finally got everything assembled, I had to disassemble it to put this piece back in.

Also, the drill press unit rotates and locks "vertical." Mine's not perfectly vertical...probably off 1-2 degrees. I can't figure out how to get it to be straight.

I could go on, but it would be more of the same. After struggling with it and taking about an hour to assemble it, I learned that my older 1998 Dremel doesn't even fit in the collar. So I'm going to have to go buy another Dremel in order to use the drill press.

I am really disappointed in Dremel!! This is NOT up to Dremel standards. Dremel, if you're listening, I will write your assembly instructions for you if you send me a new Dremel that works with this!

UPDATE: I'd like to add even more information on this one. Now that it's assembled, and I've used it a few times...this was a complete waste of money. It is so flimsy...when you're trying to drill a hole, the holder for the Dremel tool wiggles around, and makes it hard to drill precise holes. $50 or so is not a horrible price, but I've owned other Dremel accessories in the past, including the previous drill press and the router, and none have ever been of poor quality. This has some nice design features (crow's nest holder for drill bits), and it's pretty (blue plastic and chrome is "decorative" and looks pretty on my workbench)...but it is simply not a quality piece of machinery. Oh, the cast aluminum base is nice. But if you need precision, I hear that there's a machined drill press online somewhere that is a better quality for a little more money, and probably well worth it. If you're drilling imprecise holes in balsa wood or Twinkies, then this might work for you.

I bought this workstation to use as a drill press for my crafts business. I consider myself relatively handy and intelligent and the instructions could not have been more worthless. Bad graphics, poor wording. I was able to "successfully" assemble it only after lucking out at the local hardware superstore where they had a Dremel demo last weekend. The nice guy running the demo took one out of the box for me and helped me set it up. He agreed the instructions were, uh, lacking. Also recommended that I use plumbers' tape to fix the wobbliness of the tube assembly. Overall this piece is useful but it's also a big disappointment. C'mon Dremel, you can do way better.

p.s. The packaging and such may not list it, but this *does* accommodate the Dremel 4000 Series.

"Misleading and Poor Quality" 2010-09-18

This product says that it will fit a Dremel 395. My problem is that the Dremel I am in possession of is a model 395 circa 1984. The Dremel I have has a different body style than the current 395's and will not fit the drill press. I can understand this mistake but it would have saved me time and money spent to know this detail. As for the press itself it is definitely of budget construction. The assembly is pretty simple but that is after you interpret the poorly written and skimpy instructions. All-in-all you get something that should be priced around $40.00 and in today's world that is not saying much. The old Dremel in my possession is still going strong after 26 years; I don't think this drill press will have much worth after the same amount of time except as scrap metal and plastic.

"Dremel 400 overheating issues" 2010-06-23

I'm on my 4th Dremel 400 after the first three burned their motors out during light to medium use. The first one only lasted 2 days and 'died' while carving a cow bone pendant - hardly what I would consider a demanding task. Subsequent replacements have ended up the same way, despite my taking great care not to obstruct the cooling vents with my hand. The problem seems to be exacerbated by using the flex-shaft attachment (extra load plus you can't feel the unit overheating).

One minute you're happily working away, the next you smell the acrid stench of burning plastic and look down to see smoke pouring from the unit.

Since I only use these for hobby/jewelry work, I am very disappointed and frustrated with constant returns and the loss of use that follows. Upon an investigation, it seems many have suffered the same problems and written about them on various online forums.

Since the 3rd one burned out, I have given up on Dremel, which is a shame since I have used them for 15 years and it only seems the more recent models that lack the quality I once enjoyed.

I received a Proxxon IB/E today and have just taken it out the box and tried it out. I will write a review on it after a few weeks but it seems to be much better made and runs very smoothly - also, the collets are steel and thicker walled. So far it looks good!

In the US, Dremel is synonymous with rotary tools, which is unfortunate; they don't make any good tools. For about the same money you can get a Proxxon. I have used both the Dremel 400XPR and Proxxon FBS 115/E (my work purchased the Dremel, I brought my own Proxxon). The Dremel vibrates and is loud. It uses an old-fashioned brushed motor. Carbon brushes actually last a long time, so I wouldn't knock it for that, but they are very loud and smell of ozone. The Proxxon is smooth and quiet. It uses a brushless motor. Why would anyone in their right mind put anything but a brushless motor in a hand-held rotary tool? The Dremel claims to have higher power and faster RPM, but I'm afraid to use the Dremel turned up to max RPM. The vibration makes my hand numb even at half speed. The Dremel uses collets to hold tool bits. It uses cheap, soft collets that bind and get stuck on the tool bit. You can completely unscrew the collet from the shaft and the bit will stay stuck in the collet teeth. If you gently tap down on the end of the bit it will loosen from the collet. Proxxons do not have this problem. They use a compact, keyless chuck. You can buy a chuck for the Dremel as an extra accessory.

I could go on, but I think I made my point: I hate Dremel. I wish they were not the default brand that most people think of when they need a rotary tool. I'm sure there are other rotary tools beside the Proxxon which are also better than a Dremel. I just happen to own and like Proxxon.

"Useful Tool but overheating a problem" 2009-01-04

I have owned this Model 400 for about 2 years and have put it through it's paces. I have used it mostly for deburring, polishing and metal cutting. For these uses it functioned great but I did notice that the motor often got very hot. In fact, it got too hot to touch on some occasions.

I noted smoke coming from the casing during several uses. The tool finally, abruptly, burned out.

One problem I have noted is the design of the case causes the user to cover the front air slots with his hand while in use. This certainly adds to the over heating issues.

I was going to replace my Dremel today but discovered I could only by the model 400 in a set which is how it originally came to me and I do not need another planner, sharpening guide or many of the other things in the $99 kit. The tool alone retails for $80 so I guess I will end up buying the kit again and selling the junk I will never use on Flea-Bay.

My Dremel 4000 went back to Amazon after less than 2h into testing.

The tool rattled, hissed and heated in a manner that made it scary to operate. After a while at the highest speed setting, **without any load attached**, the temperature rose to such a degree that it was impossible to hold the tool with bare hands, particularly close to the front of the tool. I did not obstruct the vents - it was just an idle operation!

I attached the MS400 saw attachment to the tool, which was one of the reasons I bought Dremel 4000, and it appeared fine at moderate speeds. I then attached a flexible shaft that I used with another single-speed Dremel tool for ~15 years. The shaft was carefully attached. At low speed setting, the Dremel 4000 was unable to start with the shaft, although there was no load at the other end of that shaft. As I increased the speed, the Dremel started with all the by now familiar scary noises and rattling. With the speed moved towards maximum, the shaft disintegrated, with components flying around me and staining carpet and furniture with grease. Analysis of the situation revealed that the tool heated not only itself but also the end of the shaft. The plastic hose of the shaft softened to he extend that it slipped from the grip from the tool's end and the shaft disintegrated. It has not been possible to put the shaft back together. After the event, I had to wait for more than 15 minutes until I could touch the front of Dremel - otherwise I would have had second degree burns.

My Dremel 4000 turned out not to be just bad, but also dangerous. The tool went back to Amazon and I have got a refund, but I lost my shaft for good. The overall impression of the Dremel 4000, in terms of how it felt when held in hand, was that of a half-baked prototype put into production. After the advice from other reviewers, I bought subsequently Proxxon 38472 FBS 115/E, as my next attempt at a variable speed tool. Proxxon is a delight to work with, particularly after the Dremel 4000. Its operation is smooth, quiet and precise due to the lack of any shaking such as experienced with the Dremel. I am baffled by the fact that a company with such a tradition may put this kind of trash out.

Two examples of why Dremel is still the unquestionable leader in mini-rotary tools:

I recently bought a 4000-3/34 and I wanted to use the chuck I had been using on my old 395 instead of the collets. It didn't fit through the hole in the nosepiece of the 4000, so I took off the nosepiece and enlarged the hole. I wasn't satisfied with the 'quick-and-dirty' job I had done, so I contacted Dremel in Palm Desert in order to buy a replacement nosepiece. Without any questions they told me they'd send it right out to me at no charge as warranty service. When it arrive it was, unfortunately, the wrong part. Well, that's happened to me before, with other companies' tools, so even though they had been good enough to provide it for free (and the tool was working fine as it was) I decided to try again. And again, they told me they'd send a replacement at no cost with no questions or reluctance. Within a few days I had the right part, and I did a better job enlarging the hole (I subsequently discovered that the chuck they're selling now will fit the stock nosepiece).

The reason I had bought the 4000 is that my venerable 395 had broken down and I needed to finish a job without delay. When I opened up the 395 I discovered that there was a "flexible link" between the motor and the output shaft, and it had stripped. It was a short piece of flexible plastic tubing with internal splines to engage the metal shafts at both ends, and it was shredded inside. Initially I thought this was a regrettable design flaw, but I realized that it's just the weak link to prevent the user from damaging more expensive parts by challenging the tool too hard. Anyway, when I went to order the part, the woman who answered knew immediately what I was referring to and was able to complete my order efficiently. She even pointed out that, with the cost of the part being so small compared to the shipping (which was minor as well), I might consider ordering a second one. She encouraged me to leave the second one in the sealed package to prevent it from weakening from oxidation, and it would be ready to install if I should ever need it. Considering how old my 395 is, I'm not worried about that being any time soon. The parts arrived in a couple of days, and my 395 is back in action. And, considering how nice an upgrade the 4000 is, I don't mind having been forced to become the owner of two Dremels.

Dremel tools are well-designed and well-built, as long as the user works within the limits of their appropriate use (these are not industrial die-grinders). Craftsmanship is more a matter of patience and care than brute force. But any tool will require service at some point, if it's used a lot over the years, and that's where a manufacturer shows what they're really all about. With the kind of service I've received, I'd say it's no wonder that no other manufacturer has made much of a dent in the mini-rotary tool market. Dremel makes good products in the first place, and they back them up well. I'll never even consider buying a Dremel-like tool from anyone else!

The series 4000 rotary tool from Dremel just continues the heritage of quality. About 40 some odd years ago I used Dremel rotary tools for machining cylinder heads and intake manifolds. I wish I had bought my Dremel when I began to build my model railroad. Not only is it a time saver, but it makes cutting so much more accurate. I first used a hand saw to cut lengths of track. And since I model in "n" scale (1 - 160), accuracy is a must. My hobby shop recommended a hand saw that they sold and I started to use it to cut track. Then, for my birthday, I got a Dremel. What a difference in both accuracy and time. I now have my Dremel hung from a hook on the side of my layout.

"HORRIBLE assembly instructions..." 2010-09-28

I've owned Dremel products for years, and like them. I bought this expecting it to work with my "older" Dremel from the late 1990s...

First of all, out of the box...NO VISUAL STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS whatsoever. I've written technical documentation in the past, and have assembled many things including a full-sized Craftsman table saw. I was shocked at how horrible and incomplete the instructions were for this product. It has a not-so-helpful diagram, and a few short instructions in the "Assembly" area of the manual. As far as I'm concerned, I could've been reading the Spanish instructions and had an easier time.

There is a telescoping tube that has rubber caps on each end. Not understanding what they are for, I removed them and took the two tubes apart (they were never mentioned in the assembly). Then I struggled to figure out how to put it all together. It ends up you're supposed to leave the two tubes nested, and extend one of them. Not clear from the instructions! (perhaps that was covered in the Spanish section!)

There is a locking mechanism on the back of the unit that holds the Dremel, but I don't think it ever mentions attaching it BEFORE sliding the drill press unit down the shaft...so after I finally got everything assembled, I had to disassemble it to put this piece back in.

Also, the drill press unit rotates and locks "vertical." Mine's not perfectly vertical...probably off 1-2 degrees. I can't figure out how to get it to be straight.

I could go on, but it would be more of the same. After struggling with it and taking about an hour to assemble it, I learned that my older 1998 Dremel doesn't even fit in the collar. So I'm going to have to go buy another Dremel in order to use the drill press.

I am really disappointed in Dremel!! This is NOT up to Dremel standards. Dremel, if you're listening, I will write your assembly instructions for you if you send me a new Dremel that works with this!

This is a good buy if you don't use the EZ-Lock system and you've lost or damaged a lot of your basic tools. If you do a lot of a particular task, like polishing or metal cut off, you're better off buying just the pieces you need.

I leave a Dremel at a shared cottage and last time I opened the case nothing was there but the Dremel and one arbor, so this is what I bought to re-establish the kit. Happy, and I'm locking it up.

We purchased this Dremel kit to primarily maintain our dogs nails.

The extension cable is great since it reduces vibration and noise to allow our pooch to relax more while we are sanding down his nails.

There is to much in the kit to describe (over 50 accessories) but eventually we will use them all.

As usual delivery was on time and its just such a pleasure buying from amazon

They always seem to beat pricing and with PRIME membership, I never have to worry about those add-on fees that you get for shipping a small item from other online retail shops.

The Dremel is a fine tool which you won't be dissapointed in.

I had an old model 395 which went bad after 25 years and thousands of hours of use and abuse. I needed a new one so I purchased the 400xpr model which only last 6 months and burned up. I was upset because I hadn't saved the receipt. I sent the tool back with a note explaining the problem and within 10 days I had a new 4000 which is working great for me. They realized the 400 had a problem which is why it has been discontinued. 5 year warantee!!!! Great customer service!

I purchased this at the weekend to make a custom PC case but was worried because alot of other reviews said it died after 10 mins.

Mine works great.

I was cutting metal and wood with it for an afternoon with no major issues.

One thing (thats why it didnt get 5 stars) is that the motor's air vent is where your hand goes. this means when it gets hot it is uncomforable to hold.

Not a big issue, however.

I am very pleased i purchesd this dremel.

I've owned a few of these tools, and they haven't disapointed me.

I love my Dremels; they can do just about any light-duty household or home improvement task you ask of them.

I got this one for Christmas in 2006, and have used it for the last two years. I've never had a problem with it, and it's performed flawlessly in everything I've asked it to do, and even some things it's not supposed to do!

This is the new version of the XPR and Multi-Pro model. Carried over from the other models are the ball-bearing supported motorshaft, adjustible speeds from 5,000-35,000 RPM's, replacable motor brushes, and the 1/8 inch quick-change collets. The XPR2's casing is redesigned with a larger cooling fan and inlets. This is because the motor has been replaced with a larger, more powerful one. The old Milti-Pro's and XPR's had 1-1.5 amp motors; the XPR2 has a 2-amp motor, which gives more torque, power, and increases the max RPM rating to 35,000. This is the same as the XPR and lower-end (AC, not battery) Dremels, but the 2-amp motor means it can do more (with the optional mini planer, circular saw, router, and flex shaft attachments), and do it more quickly and efficiently.

So far, I haven't had a major problem with this one. It's served me faithfully, and done what I needed it to without complaining. The only problem it's given me was using the mini-circular saw attachment to cut some countertop laminate. the saw bound, and it overheated to the point it released its magic blue smoke, and the motor burned up.

It was under warranty, so I sent it back to Dremel, and they sent me a new one, free!

I use these for everything from sanding, shaping, polishing, planing, routing, drilling, cleaning, cutting plastic, steel, aluminum, brass, copper, deburring, grinding, engraving, and sharpening. The endless number and variety of tools and accessories (drill press, diamond cutting bits, a router, mini-planer, flex-shaft compatibility, spiral saws, mini drill bits) means this tool can do pretty much everything you'd expect a small powertool to do, even some things a larger tool can do!

The manual specs a maximum attachment diameter of 1-1/4 inches, but I run a 2-inch polishing wheel on mine no problem!

If you are looking for an electric rotary tool, look no further. The new battery powered Dremels are nice and worlds better than the old ones, but if you are looking for power, go for the XPR2. This tool really can do almost everything. The only thing it can't do is drive nails!

Used this to grind down a sticking door, and adjust the size a different door that I was about to hang, with great success. I recommend that you take a few minutes to get a feel for the balance of the tool before getting started or you WILL get a wavy cut. It gets a 4 instead of a 5 because it leaves 'pass marks' that have to be sanded out or neatened up with a block plane.

Would have liked to see a depth adjustment on this plane, but I am very happy with it.

I got this tool as part of a set. i was very excited, i thought i'd never have to use my chisels to clean up the edge of some my wood working projects, boy was i wrong, as others have said it takes a large, uneven bite. I would think that with practice that uneven bite problem could be fixed. however while trying to get it to work right, the blade got warped some how, making it impossible to make a good cut, so i bought a second bit and was extremely careful with it, and it still warped. I have removed this tool from my dremel kit

Not adjustable at all.

I needed this to shave off a little bit of wood backing that was sticking out 1/8" from behind some book shelves I built. The problem is that the planer is only designed to be used in one direction. If you can't use it in the direction they want you to, you are out of luck. Also, you can't change the depth of the cut, so if you don't want that deep or shallow of a cut, you are out of luck there too.

I ended up using the planing bit without the casing, and had better luck doing it that way, but it wasn't perfect like I was hoping the kit would be able to provide.

I would have given it only one star except that I was able to use the planing bit alone for what I needed. That is why two stars.

"Good Idea wrong tool" 2009-03-29

I burned up my brand new XPR400 with this little gadget. I trimmed off maybe 1/4 inch off of 3 doors. By the 3rd door the motor was sounding rough. The motor burned up the next day using it with a cut off wheel. This attachment makes the unit get realllly hot. The tool is turning a really large blade compared to anything else you turn with it. To top that off with the end of the blade isnt supported by anything it just fits in a hole and rides metal on metal. Dremel says the blade is designed to last as long as the attachement 500 BF. I did about 200 and its pretty much ground off (Very old Pine).

I think if you keep the motor well blown out. Dont over tax it and plane a fair amount of 3/4 or less wide your good to go. It really works well. 3 or 4 10 minute sessions on a 1.5 inch door will prove to much for this little tool IMO.

I'm going to see if Dremel will honor the warranty. I will let you all know.

Feel Cheated!

There are many websites that claim that the DREMEL XPR PLANER is compatible with many Dremel Multis . When I recieved the planer the box stated only for the 400 Model! When I contacted Dremel they said that although it might fit it is unsafe to use for only the 400 is fast enough! Most reviews of the 400 say that it's not worth the upgrade. The cost and bother of returning is not worth it. I am stuck with it.

Don't buy unless you are planning to get the 400- it is probably included in most kits.

If you want to spend your hard earned money on a tool that will overheat and die on simple tasks, this is the tool for you. Unfortunately, mine died after the warranty date since I don't use it that often. I'd say mine had a grand total of 1 hour of time on it and it's now a paperweight.

I notice there is no mention of this model on Dremel's site and for good reason, they know it's a POS and want to sweep it under the rug.

Dremel has become synonymous with rotary tools much like Kleenex has become synonymous with facial tissues. Unfortunately for Dremel, their product line is getting worse. I also have the cordless 10.8V Li model and it too is severely lacking in both strength and longevity.

Time to look for a company that makes rotary tools for the long haul.

Dremel, you had your day and you blew it. You will eventually realize that word of mouth will show your substandard trinkets for what they are and will watch your market share fade into the wind.

I looked at replacing this POS with the 4000 series but realized I'd just be throwing good money after bad to a company that obviously cares more about its revenue stream than the quality of its tools and the satisfaction of its consumers.

I now have to research and find a rotary tool...one that hopefully accepts all of the Dremel attachments...and cut ties with Dremel. Should they eventually start producing/marketing quality tools, I may try them out once again. As of now? No dice. I work too hard for my money to piss it away on garbage that dies when doing simple tasks.

We purchased the Whistler PI-400W from Amazon and received it just in time for our vacation/road trip from CT to Florida (Round trip of over 48 hours on the road). The unit comes with a lighter adapter and also 3 ft cables to run to the battery. We opted to connect directly to the battery of our our 1999 Honda Civic in order to get the full power of the unit (lighter adapter has a max output of 180 watts - different for each vehicle). Guys, be honest with yourselves: how are you really going to use a chainsaw? If you're eyeing a high-end Husqvarna or Echo because that's what the lumberjacks and arborists use, I hear you. I love pro-grade tools, too. With chainsaws, though, you don't necessarily get what you pay for.

I've used gas chainsaws. They're great for felling, limbing and bucking whole trees in places where electricity is unavailable or inconvenient. These days, though, I use a chainsaw no more than once or twice a year, usually for some little job that's just barely beyond the capabilities of a bow saw. When those jobs come up, I can whip out my electric Poulan, finish the work, and put the saw away before you've even gotten the choke set on your gas saw.

That's not to say that this saw won't handle a big job. It will. I had a couple of huge oaks taken down last winter, and saved a bunch of money by telling the arborists to do a "cut and run" - just drop the trees, chip the small brush, and leave the big logs behind. This saw and I had no trouble limbing and bucking pieces up to two feet in diameter.

I purchased Poulan Pro 400E 18-Inch 4 HP Electric Chain Saw about 2 months ago. I have used it to cut fallen trees from the last year's storm. Some of the trees are about 22-25 inch in diameter. The chain saw ripped through them without any problem. I am going to test it next on a 30 inch trunk that is left.

Given its very low price and easy maintenance, I highly recommend it. The only limitation is the wire length, which for those who have portable generator should not be a problem.

Just retired my gas powered Poulan and switched to the Poulan Pro 400E Electric. Good move, no compromise in power. I will gladly give up the mobility of my old gas chainsaw for the simplicity and reliability of electric. All of my cutting needs are around the house and my 100' 14 gauge cord works great and gets me where I need to be. Although the manual says a 100' cord is "not recommended", it works just fine. I actually expected to have to buy a 12 guage cord to keep from getting power drain, I was please to see my old cord works great. I just cut up a large quantity of dense 10" diameter hardwood and it didn't tax the saw at all.

A big bonus for me is not mixing gas and oil, not polluting the air and not awakening the dead (and all my neighbors) since switching to electric.

this item is only good for small jobs. i found that you have to tighten the collet nut down pretty tight if you are cutting something big (over 1/2 inch thinkness) because if you don't the bit will loosen up. also it cuts at an angle because when you tighten down the screw thing that adjusts the height it puts it at an angle. had a hard time cutting 1/2 thick piece of wood with it so only for small jobs.

I haven't used this a ton yet, but have cut some drywall with it and I think its great. Very easy to take on and off the dremel, very easy to adjust how deep you want the cut too.

Of course you can cut drywall without this tool, but now that I have it and see how easy it is to control the dremel this way, I would not want to go back to not having it

We use a rotary tool for trimming the toenails on our dogs. We've gone through several brands and models, and this one seems the best combination of easy to hold, relatively quiet, and reasonable cost. They usually last about as long as they are warrantied for (2 years I think). In a less dusty service, they might last quite a bit longer. We quit using Dremel many years ago because they cost a lot more, usually only come with a lot of expensive accessories, and don't last any longer.

The EZ Lock mandrel is just what I have been looking for all these years. I've spent countless hours using my dremel to cut metal parts and the old grinding wheels would easily break apart. The replacement process was painful, requiring using a small set screw and a screw driver.

The EZ Lock mandrel can accept a variety of EZ Lock attachments such as polishing wheels, and more importantly, the cut-off wheels that are included in this starter kit. Essentially, the EZ Lock mandrel has a locking cam that requires you to insert the attachment and rotate it 90 degrees so that it fits into another pattern allowing you to secure it. This is a simple 1 second procedure that doesn't require any special tools. It is a true time saver for the hobbyist or gearhead that makes use of cutting wheels for projects.

The downside is the cutting wheel itself. The labeled surface is not very abrasive, so you can't use that side to grind stuff or smooth out surfaces. I know that cutting wheels are really intended to be used as cutting wheels, but I frequently use the wheels to smooth surfaces as well although you can use an abrasive bit to do the same job. The underside of the wheel (the dark side) is abrasive and can be used to sharpen/smooth out metal. The cutting wheels are larger, thicker, and more flexible than the cheap wheels that are the thickness of postage stamps. It is well worth the extra cost.

Pros: The EZ Lock mandrel is a true time saver, a MUST BUY for any dremel/rotary tool kit

Cons: ZERO - the mandrel is awesome!

Overall: 5/5 stars, absolute must buy for anyone that has a dremel/rotary tool

Regret is all I can say. First and biggest complain is that the On/Low/High switch is complete garbage. It never locks into place and i often jump from low to high speed, right past off when trying to shut it off.

The battery never tightly locks into place either..it's always a slight bump from coming off.

Battery life is very short, but that's not all that surprising.

Last Dremel name brand i ever buy again.

After our last trip to the vet, I knew I finally had to find an alternative to nail clippers. My 100-pound St. Bernard/Lab mix has very thick black nails, so they are difficult to trim. Our vet started to cut, and almost immediately my dog was yelping in pain from the pinching pressure of the clippers, and several cut quicks. A very unpleasant experience for all of us.

I did some searching on Amazon and came across the Dremel 761-03 Pet Grooming Tool. After reading customer reviews, I decided to buy the 7700-02 instead. It's perfect!!

At first my dog was very nervous, so I gave her lots of praise and small treats, until she was used to the noise. Then I moved on to sanding one nail at a time, followed by a small treat. Now when she sees the Dremel, she gets exited and happily lays down for her manicure! The sanding creates a lot of nail dust, and tiny chips can shoot through the air, so you'll want to do this outside and wear protective eye wear.

This tool is very lightweight and easy to maneuver. I wish I would have done this years ago! If your dog has large nails, this is the tool for you!

First, this was my mistake not to check/count the 50 accesories when I got the order.

I needed a tool to groom my small dogs' nails and decided to purchased this more powerful tool so that I could it for other uses 19 monhts ago.

Now I want to use this to cut a metal and while reading the manual I found that the package should have 50 accesories, which includes 15 of cutting heads (#409) and 2 of #420, but apparently there are only 2 of #409 and 1 of #420 in the box.

I know I did not loose them because I only used them a few times and kept them well in my office.

I am so disappointed that the package misseed many of them.

I like the tool very much but determine to post and give it 3 stars for missing many (14) items.

So it would be worth to check your inventory that you have the complete 50 accessories.

I have 4 english mastiffs and this grinder works great. My only complaint is that I wish the battery lasted longer. Grinding is MUCH preferable to using a clipper and it's fairly easy to teach the dog to allow its use. I always dreaded cutting their nails, but no more. Just have lots of little treats handy so they associate the experience in a positive manner.

The switch on this Anniversary Edition is flimsey plastic and the tool quit after 1/2 hr of use. Dremel promptly replaced the tool with a 300i free of charge; that one has a real switch and works great. The Anniversary Edition comes with a nice retro tin box and a pocket knife, which are nice touches, but the tool itself was no good (at least in my case). If you are looking for a multi-speed Dremel tool just buy the 300 series and skip this Anniversary Edition.

Do not waste your money on this poorly made plunge router base. I found that the cheap plastic construction allowed the Dremel to wobble thus making accurate cuts, especially straight lines very dificult. When lowering the Dremel using the plunge feature, one side or the other will stick and cause the whole assembly to bind. I threw this base in the trash and bought Stewmac's metal router base that has an air blower accessary which is a great system. You can make clear plastic special purpose bases and attach them easily to the Stewmac. I build guitars so accuracy is important.

Well, I just loved this thing for about a year, then the screw to hold the depth constant, the handle screw, not the depth screw completely failed. Now I can only use it as a plunge router. It will not hold for a set depth anymore. That makes for a very limited tool. I have read the reviews for the alternate "knockoff" version, and am not impressed, so I'll guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy another one like this. I would gladly pay double for a unit that is built better, because I end up buying 2 instead of having one good one. That one will eventually fail too.

It turns out that this DOES work with the Dremel 10.8 v Li Ion model (AKA, the 800 or 8000 model)! The literature that came with my cordless Dremel claimed that the two don't work together. However, I nervously purchased the plunge router attachment from a Home Depot which was advertising the two as working together and it turns out that they do! I just tried it and the cordless model screwed into the attachment perfectly. I routed several grooves successfully using the plunge router and the included edge guide.

My biggest complaint is the following: The clamps that secure the edge guide are not very secure, so the guide slowly slipped without my realizing it, resulting in about a 1-2 mm difference in the location of the groove I was cutting between start and finish on one piece of wood. Once I knew that this was I risk, I was just very careful to tighten all the clamps as much as I possibly could and it didn't happen again.

It would also be nice to have an easier method of adjusting and measuring the depth and distance along the edge guide without having to use external measurement tools.

Make sure you take note of the depth lock on the handle. It's very useful for locking in a depth without having to hold down the router against the springs.

Other than that, it works as I would expect it to and I'm pleased with my purchase. Although I have the router bit collection, I so far have only used the attachment with one of the high speed carving bits to make a pencil thin decorative groove in the edge of a picture frame. I was only using basswood, so I can't say how it would stand up to a more strenuous challenge.

This attachment sounded perfect for the model making and dolls' house building I want to do. Thought I'd be able to do some nice box joints with an appropriate jig. Some problems - (1) you can't use standard screw in guide bushings, (2) even if you could get the bit centered on the base, it moves when you cut, so you get wiggly cuts, even with the edge guide (this is presumably why they don't give you guide bushings with any kind of tolerance).

Save you money towards a real router.

I try to always do my research before purchasing online, and in this case, I thought I had.

The product description clearly states "Rotary tool includes 30 accessories to perform wide variety of tasks"

What I received was:

2 clamps,

4 sanding drums and the shaft to hold them,

20 cut-off discs and the shaft to hold them.

THAT'S IT!

Could someone please enlighten me as to "the wide variety of tasks" one could do with only sanding drums and cut-off discs?

As for the tool itself, I have no problem- I understand that it won't accept 3/32" Dremel bits.

My advice is to skip the disappointment of this package and buy just the tool alone, then the accessories you want, separately.

My Dremel 395 failed after about 10 years and I didn't want a big kit full of accessories since I already had that from the Dremel. The longer you have one of these things around, the more you find yourself reaching for it to do all kinds of things, so I really missed it! Dremel's price for just the tool is high these days (though they're still made in U.S.A) so I looked around and found the Black & Decker one at close to half the price of the Dremel equivalent (the B&D is made in China; wish they were made here, but it must be the reason for the price difference). It's somewhat larger and heavier than the Dremel, but not enough to be cumbersome. I've had no problems using it. It's well thought-out. I like the design of the chuck lock and speed control. It feels solid and well-made. One thing that I was pleased to find is that the ring behind the chuck that you unscrew to put on some attachments is the same thread size as the Dremel, so I can still use my Dremel chain saw sharpening attachment, and it looks like anything else that needs that mounting arrangement should work with this one also; incidentally, so does the flex-drive attachment that came in my Dremel kit. The tool doesn't fit well into the bottom of the drawstring bag that came with it; it's just a bit too long, but it can be gotten in there at an angle if you wish. I don't plan to keep it in there anyway, and the few accessories packaged with it are really elementary, but as I said I was just after the tool itself so that's fine. I would have bought it alone if they offered it that way. All-in-all, I'd recommend this to anyone who needs one.

Let me say for starters that I haven't been a big Black/Decker fan for a long time(Black and Decker quit making tough power tools around 1990-1991).If I wanted a power drill currently....I'd buy a expensive/sturdy drill.Secondly,I've used Dremel 395 models for a long time,yes I've found them to be expensive but they do the job.So what could be better than a Dremel tool?A Black & Decker RTX-these are twice the motor power of a Dremel Tool,very well designed and comfortable to use(has a very nice rubber grip for extensive handling options during use),has a universal collet to except a massive range of dremel and aftermarket accessories(including a threaded section for the Flex Shaft),and a cool Flip Lock system to making changing bits a one-handed operation.Did I mention the RTX is half the price of a Dremel Tool.This tool is huge competition against Dremel,and my hopes for the RTX model is that it will become a main staple by Black/Decker and more advanced models will be released years down the road.Get a B&D RTX and save yourself some money :)

First off...the on/off switch is pistol grip and one is continuously accidently turning it on. Major injury is waiting to happen.

Performance is excellent. I let it cool down as needed. Runs much longer/stronger than my Dremel did. Changed to Proxxon based on current comparable reviews. I am happy with the Proxxon...and try to be EVER alert not to accidently turn it on.

Dremel blew out top RPMs within days. Dremel burned out completely in six months. Dremel made return a challenge; choose to replace. Very disappointed. Proxxon is on 2nd six months. So far, so good.

Typical hobby wood working and occassional household chore.

I bought this model about five years ago, and I'm very happy with it. When I bought it I wasn't aware of the more expensive Proxxon. But if I had it to do over, I would buy this model again for one very simple, but important to me, reason. This one comes with a three jaw drill chuck, and accepts the Proxxon collet chuck as an accessory. The more expensive model comes with the collet chuck, but will not accept the drill chuck. This is because the housing at the front end of the expensive model interferes with the larger diameter drill chuck, so it won't fit.

Why is this important to me? Because, among other things, I use this tool to spin very small diameter drill bits, e.g., sizes #61 to #80, and the collet chuck can't grip them. These small drills like to be spun fast, and this is the ideal tool to do it. It's true that very small drills can be purchased with oversize shanks, but they're quite a bit more expensive than ordinary ones, and since they break easily, it could become an expensive habit. Bottom line; for me this is the one to get.

In summary, I destroyed the motor while trying to cut 2mm thick aluminum plates(about 48" long) using this tool with the dremel metal cutting wheel. Under stress, temperatures will rise to a point where you would not be able to hold tool. Sent it in for warranty, and received the tool back in 2 weeks with a new motor to finish the job,.. Figured I'd rest the tool once it gets beyond holdable temperatures(which happens pretty fast under stress). Tool has potential, but under heavy stress, you must use it wisely to avoid any malfunctions.

I also owned a dremel 4000 before trading up (these have their own issues). This tool lacks the power, but definitely has more control.

I was a bit worried about my choice until I used it. WOW!!......Smooth, powerful, and well balanced. Far superior to any other small rotary tool that I have ever used.

Based on the reviews i read here, I bought a PROXXON ROTARY TOOL. It did indeed run smooth. I am making diamond willow canes and was using this tool with carbide burrs to clean and shape. The tool got warmer but not hot so i kept using it. It finally started missing and finally quit entirely. I sent it in and had it replaced with a new one. Now the new one is doing the same thing. I have read reviews that say the DREMEL does the same thing.

The bottom line here is that both tools are not designed for heavy continuous work. I am going to buy a DREMEL 400 and send in the PROXXON and use both in a rotation. It should be interesting to see which gives out first. When I find out, I will post an update so inquiring minds will know.

I might go to a die grinder. It is heavier and more awkward, but I could then us both 1/4 and 1/8 inch attachments.

Don't even think about buying a Dremel, this tool is insane. It's so smooth, you'll never use anything else. It has a bunch of different collets, and the biggest one at 1/8 fits all the Dremel bits.

The speed control is constant, even as you apply a load, which is great. I bought the keyless chuck with it, I would recommend that as well.

The box doesn't hold squat for bits, so I used my old Dremel case. That works a lot better.

I ran this thing up to 20k rpm with a big cutting blade on it and it was smooth as can be. Try that on a Dremel and you think there's an earthquake happening, it rattles so much.

For an essential tool like this, ditch the Dremel and go with Proxxon.

Absolutely fantastic. Best tool on my workbench.

Much less noisy than a Dremel, zero vibration, speed control that actually works well, exceedingly solid construction.

I use this combined with the Proxxon drill press stand (which Amazon also sells) to drill holes in homemade circuit boards. Works like a charm, even with the tiniest drill bits. I can do hundreds of holes perfectly and never break a bit.

I own a range of power tools from home-/hobby-grade to professional-grade. Very rarely, I run into a tool that's priced to be accessible to the home user, but provides quality at a professional level. This is one of those rare tools.

Certainly, this tool is more expensive than Dremel's competing products, but it's almost unfair to compare this tool to anything Dremel makes. I have owned a lot of Dremel products, and I was considering purchasing the Dremel 4000 to use as a spindle for a homemade CNC PCB router. I had no previous experience with anything Proxxon makes, so it was a bit of a leap of faith. I'm more than happy I bought the Proxxon.

The Proxxon IB/E is 30% more expensive than the Dremel 4000, but you get about 200% more tool for your money. The tool is built with far better precision. The plastic parts of the body feel like a serious power tool, and the aluminum nose that supports the bearings makes the whole thing feel indestructible compared to other tools in its class.

You can run the Proxxon at its highest speed setting, and it's far quieter than the Dremel running at its lowest. A quieter tool isn't just beneficial to the operator's hearing. A quieter tool is also an indication of fewer wearing surfaces inside the tool (brushes, bearings, gears, etc). All Dremels I've used sound like they're actively trying to destroy themselves. The Proxxon sounds like other tools that are far more expensive.

From the perspective of a student of CNC machining, the Proxxon excels at my use as a milling spindle. Even if it wasn't a more precise tool (the most important aspect), the noise level and separate power switch puts this tool way ahead of the pack. The 20mm round mounting surface (used to attach the IB/E to any "Micromot" accessory), makes this tool far easier to integrate into a micro-sized milling machine than its competitors.

A lot of tool manufacturers are in a free-fall of decreasing quality right now (largely a result of dramatic cost-cutting and outsourcing of their facilities). The Proxxon tools will not disappoint you like most of the established brand names will.

originally tried the Neiko tool as it was too cheap to resist (see my review on that) when I returned it for refund I ordered this, the ad copy bragging about accurate low runout spindle drew me in. It is as quiet as everybody says, no perceptible runout and seems very well made. I haven't tried heavy material removal or weld grinding with it yet, so no opinion on power, but have run it for > hour deburring bronze. very impressed. and mine wasn't made in china, for once. I understand that Proxxon is German, so I won't state ALL of them are made in Luxembourg as German companies commonly MFG the same product at various global locations to serve markets or be able to shift production as one area becomes advantageous. The collets seem very good, I have used 2 of them, and no perceptible vibration at all. I chose the more expensive "PRO" as I do 90% metal work, and felt the long term quill support might be better on it.

"Good for the price" 2010-08-05

The item is a low cost way to do small routing work. I obtained it to make marionette controls. But, be aware that the item is not usable as a stand-alone router. You must screw it to a wood surface. The attaching of the Dremel tool is not very quickly done, so it is not really practical to keep switching between using the Dremel in the router and as a hand held tool.

I set this up last night, mounted to a piece of wood and clamped to my workbench. Gave it a few hours this morning, making weaving shuttles of soft wood (pine). I agree with the poster who commented that the tool does not sit straight and centered in the table hole, and there is no way provided to adjust that. I might try a toothpick shim. Anyhoo, the table does the basic job for which I bought it, saving me some time on shaping the edges of my shuttles. I had been carving them by hand with a Flexknife.

I would not use this setup for anything large or heavy, or for any job requiring precision shaping. It's just too unstable.
